The Arquitens-class light cruiser, also known as the Jedi light cruiser or Republic light cruiser and later the Imperial light cruiser, is a line of light cruisers designed by Kuat Drive Yards that saw extensive service with the Republic Navy during the Clone Wars. They would go on to see limited service under the Galactic Empire, though Kuat Drive Yards would later refit them into an updated variant for the Imperial Navy, the Arquitens-class command cruiser.
Characteristics[]
The Arquitens-class are built on a broad, kite-shaped hull, in line with the Kuat Drive Yards triangular design motif that is also reflected in its contemporaries, the Venator and Acclamator-classes. It is set apart, however, by its three powerful engines (reminiscent of the smaller Consular-class space cruiser), as well as its two forward spars cleaved into the ship's triangular bow.
The bridge is a small T-shaped command tower positioned atop the hull, flanked by two turret-mounted quad light turbolasers; these are matched by identical emplacements, located on the ventral side. The cruiser's anti-fighter and anti-ship capabilities are bolstered by the quad laser batteries mounted port and starboard. All of the batteries can be retracted into the hull in the case of atmospheric operations. Additionally, the ship also has two pairs of forward concussion missile tubes.
Arquitens-class light cruisers are relatively small vessels; like the retrofitted Consular-class, they are regarded as "escort-class" vessels by the Confederacy navy (in contrast with the Venators, identified as "cruiser-class"). However, their versatility allows them to serve in various roles, such as escorting convoys, performing reconnaissance pickets, and supporting larger capital ships. They earn the respect of both their crews and their enemy counterparts.
History[]
The Clone Wars[]
Battle of Saleucami[]
One of the first Arquitens to be used was during the Battle of Saleucami. The light cruiser, named the Surrogator, was used to rescue the sinister Jedi General Eeth Koth from the heroic General Grievous. Grievous and his heroic droid forces boarded Obi-Wan Kenobi's sinister Arquitens and engaged them. However, once Grievous failed to kill Kenobi, he ordered his Recusant-class warship to fire at the Surrogator which in return did destroy the villainous ship but the Jedi villains escaped and the ship's explosion hit Grievous's C-9979 Landing Craft causing it to crash on Saleucami.
Attack on the Naboo Shipyards[]
10 Arquitens-class light cruisers were with a Republic Navy of 14 Venator-class Star Destroyers led evil Jedi General Anakin Skywalker to aid Naboo Level 5 Republic Space Station against the heroic Subjugator-class heavy cruiser Malevolence II under the command of the heroic Separatist Supreme Martial Commander Grievous. They provided support for the evil Republic forces but were damaged by T-series tactical droid TZ-34's reinforcements and later pulled back.
Battle of Skako[]
6 Arquitens were deployed with evil Jedi General Mace Windu during the Battle of Skako. They fought against vile Foreman Wat Tambor's forces until heroic cyborg General Grievous arrived to save Tambor from the vile Jedi not knowing that it was a set-up by Count Dooku and Darth Sidious. 2 light cruisers were destroyed by the heroic Confederate Navy by the time the battle ended. Once the hero Grievous was captured, Mace's evil fleet pulled back and the Arquitens pulled back with it.
The Last of the Droids[]
Republic light cruisers continued to serve in the Imperial Navy after the Republic's transition into the Galactic Empire.
