Thrawn or Mitth'raw'nurudo is an Imperial Admiral in the Galactic Empire. He was part of Galactic Republic as a Republic Admiral and worked closely with the evil Jedi Anakin Skywalker during the late part of the Clone Wars. He, being a Chiss, is the only non-human admiral in the Imperial Navy. He is sent into to deal with the heroic Head of State of the New Confederacy of Independent Systems Grievous after a number of Imperial defeats at the hands of Grievous and other Head of State Trench.
After Thrawn failed to put an end to the cyborg general, Moff Gideon was sent in to take on the task instead.

Taken off the task of hunting for General Grievous[]
On Coruscant, Thrawn met with Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine to discuss the recent incidents with Grievous. Palpatine was extremely disappointed with Thrawn on how he failed to destroy the heroic general every time, especially as Thrawn was a "grand" admiral. After that, Thrawn assured that he would not fail again, but Palpatine said there was no need, saying that he already had a superior candidate in mind for continuing the task. Unknown to Thrawn, the "superior candidate" Palpatine was referring to was Moff Gideon, one of the most formidable Imperial Officers in the ranks.
